Windows 10 is an amazing operating system. While it deserves to be praised for its seamless software operation, it also has great hardware functionality.

It can be used with many hardware devices, including external monitors, hard drives, and USBs. It can also notify you if there are any issues with the hardware or ports on your computer. Windows 10’s USB port is one example of such an issue.

What’s a Power Surge on a USB Port?

When you connect your USB device to the USB port, such as a printer or external hard drive, a power surge will occur.

If there is a power surge at the USB port, your USB devices will suddenly stop working. This could be due to an external device failure, a card problem, or any other issue on your computer.

Most power surges that occur on USB ports cause 70% of software issues and 30% of hardware problems. However, we will be addressing the problem with hardware first. These are the troubleshooting steps to help you identify the root causes of hardware issues.

Power Surge on USB Port

This error can be caused by many factors. This is usually due to the fact that your USB hub’s maximum power consumption exceeds the USB hub’s power requirements.

A dual-headed USB cable should not be used if the enclosure is damaged. The error message is simply a protection mechanism for your computer against damage from excessive power requirements from the USB port.

It is not always possible to guarantee that there has been no damage after a power surge on the USB port. The following solutions can be used to fix the “Power Surge USB port” error.

Run Troubleshooter

  • Use Windows logo+S to open the search box. The search box appears.
  • After typing the problem, click on the first result.
  • Click on Hardware and Devices under troubleshoot. Next, click on Run the Troubleshooter.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the troubleshooting process.

Disconnect your hardware.

Windows computers will disable a USB port if they detect a surge in power on the port. This is why you may experience a USB port not functioning after a surge.

You can fix the problem by disconnecting the USB device from its USB port. Leaving the device connected can cause permanent damage. After ensuring that the USB device is safe and working properly, you can reconnect it to the USB port to verify that it works.

Bring your computer to a repair shop

These methods may not work for you. It could be due to power issues, a defective external peripheral, or problems with the USB port. It could identify and verify faulty hardware in certain cases but it wouldn’t be possible to fix it. We recommend you take your computer to a repair shop so that it can be checked by a technician.
