Vegetarian Seasonings Spices Have Their Own Unqiue Flavors

As a Chef, I am often asked what I would serve on a vegetarian diet. My answer is always the same: anything can be used as a seasoning if you are creative. It all depends on your preference and how your food is cooked. Some people enjoy the smoky flavor of bacon, while others may not care for it at all. Nutritional yeast seasoning comes in many forms and is an excellent addition to any meal that calls for a smoked flavor.

In general, the most popular vegetarian seasonings are cayenne and chili powder. Although there are many other choices available, these two provide a unique flavor that works well with a variety of foods. In fact, one of my favorite cuisines is Indian, so I make use of cumin and chili powder liberally. In fact, the first time I made vegetarian chili (called tofu chili) I added some cayenne pepper to the sauce. The result was a spicy, yet tender chili that was absolutely delicious.

Many vegetables have their own unique flavors that you can experiment with when using vegetarian seasonings. Carrots have carrot juice, ginger root, garlic, cayenne, nutmeg and a touch of cayenne. It is possible to make a carrot salad (made with uncooked carrots) or a baked carrot cake with vegetarian spices. Bell peppers, on the other hand, have paprika, chili powder, garlic, black pepper, oregano, cinnamon and water. In the summer you can make a simple dessert with fresh bell peppers – often cut into rounds and fried in vegetable oil.

If you are more adventurous, you can experiment with soy products. Soy products include tofu, edamame (fermented soybeans), miso and tempeh, among others. The versatility of soy products is also one of the reasons why they have become so popular as vegetarian seasonings. For instance, instead of cooking with chicken broth, you can use soy sauce or sauces flavored with soy for poultry dishes, fish such as sushi, and other meat-based dishes.

A lot of people who are new to vegetarian food are wary of trying out new vegetarian spices because of the fear that they might add too much flavor that could make the vegetarian food bland. However, most seasoned vegetarian foods have very little taste of meat and are generally sweet. In fact, the greatest vegetarian spices are herbs like basil, garlic, dill and thyme, which have a mild flavor and great value for their nutrients.
